What is Free Spirit?

Free Spirit is the loyalty program of Spirit Airlines, one of the largest ultra-low-cost carriers in the U.S. Unlike traditional mileage programs, Free Spirit awards points based on dollars spent rather than distance flown. Members can redeem points for flights, benefit from tiered elite status perks, and even transfer points to select partners. The program is built around flexibility and accessibility, with redemptions starting at just 2,500 points.

Key changes to Free Spirit in 2025

  • Elite Status Qualification Simplified: Members can now achieve Silver status with just 15 flight segments per year, making it more accessible to frequent travelers.
  • Points Transfer to Alaska Airlines: Free Spirit points can now be transferred to Alaska Airlines at a 2:1 ratio, providing more flexibility in reward redemption.
  • Reinstatement of Change and Cancellation Fees: For "Go" fares purchased after February 5, 2025, change and cancellation fees have been reinstated, ranging from $59 to $99 depending on the timing of the change.
  • Free Wi-Fi for Gold Members: Gold members now enjoy complimentary in-flight Wi-Fi, allowing for streaming and browsing during flights.
  • Points Pooling: Silver and Gold members can now pool points with up to eight other Free Spirit members, making it easier to accumulate points for reward flights.

How many Free Spirit Points for a flight?

Free Spirit uses dynamic pricing, so the number of points required depends on demand, route, and fare class. However, one-way flights can be booked for as few as 2,500 points.

Fare Type Points Required (from)
One-Way Economy 2,500
Points + Cash 1,000 + cash

Example redemptions: 2,500 points for short domestic hops, 5,000–10,000 points for popular medium-haul routes, or 15,000+ points for high-demand days or longer flights.

How much are Free Spirit points worth?

The value of Free Spirit points varies depending on the route, demand, and time of booking, as the program uses dynamic pricing. However, on average, points have an estimated value of 1.1 to 1.3 cents per point.

This means that a flight that costs $33 could be available for approximately 2,500 points. A $110 flight would require between 8,000 and 10,000 points, depending on the fare type.
