Roame Travel Alternative: AwardFares vs. Roame (2026)

Roame Travel and AwardFares can uncover some of the same award seats. The real difference appears after the first promising result.

Roame gives free members Live Search across more loyalty programs than AwardFares currently supports. Its paid SkyView product is useful when the destination and dates are flexible. Roame also searches hotel awards and has an iPhone app. I still use AwardFares for a difficult flight because I can keep working on the same trip when the dates, aircraft, number of seats, or return options change.

That is not a theoretical distinction. Below, I use three trips I found with AwardFares and later flew: an ANA Business Class alert that got me home from Japan, a JAL search where the aircraft mattered as much as the route, and a mixed cabin round trip assembled for two people across three airlines.

What Is Roame Travel, and How Does It Work?

Roame, still widely searched as Roame Travel and Roame.Travel, is an award flight search service with two distinct ways to find flights.

Live Search

Live Search asks for current results between specific airports and around a defined date. Community members can search up to 25 airline loyalty programs, every cabin, and dates as far as 365 days ahead. The free plan includes a three day flexible search. Paid plans extend it to seven days.

Roame advertises results in 10 to 15 seconds. We did not benchmark that claim or compare its speed or accuracy with AwardFares.

SkyView

SkyView answers a wider question: “Where could I go across this region and period?” Paid members can search regions rather than only airport pairs and scan a 60 day window across the 365 day calendar. Free accounts receive SkyView Lite, currently limited to a seven day window for departures within 60 days.

That reach comes from saved availability. Roame checks popular routes and routes requested by alerts, stores the results, and refreshes them over time. I would repeat a promising SkyView result in Live Search before trying to book it.

Super Alerts and Wallet

Friends of Roame and Inner Circle include Super Alerts connected to the SkyView workflow. They can monitor multiple airports or regions with filters for cabin, points, stops, fees, and other preferences. The Friends plan currently includes 10 alerts and Inner Circle includes 100. Notifications are available by email, with SMS alerts in the United States and Canada.

The Roame Wallet tracks credit card and loyalty point balances. It answers “what points do I have?” rather than arranging outbound, return, and connecting flights into an itinerary. Roame also includes deal emails in its plans.

Hotel Search and the iPhone App

Roame also has a separate hotel award search. It can search hotel points availability and compare points and cash rates where that information is available. AwardFares focuses on flights and does not search hotel awards.

Roame has a native iPhone app for flight searches, alerts, and Wallet access. I did not install or test it. AwardFares works in a mobile browser and can be added to the home screen on iPhone or Android.

In short, Roame combines live flight search with stored discovery, hotel search, and points tracking. Live Search asks for current flight results, while SkyView and Super Alerts use collected availability.

Before the Stories: What AwardFares Connects

AwardFares is an award flight search and planning platform. Gold and Diamond members can run live searches across 17 loyalty programs, while free Basic accounts preview existing availability. The useful difference for me is that a result can remain part of the same trip while I change dates, monitor seats, inspect the flight, or arrange several segments.

That continuity is the part I can evaluate from experience. I have used AwardFares to find and monitor flights, then booked them with the issuing loyalty programs. The linked trip reports below show what happened after the search result appeared.

What Happens After the First Result

Most comparison tables stop at “both products search flights.” This is where the comparison actually starts.

A result can still fail the trip for reasons that have nothing to do with whether a seat appeared: the wrong aircraft operates that day, only one seat is available, the issuing program prices the flight differently, the return is missing, or the separate tickets create an impossible connection. I judge an award tool by how much work survives when the search question changes.

Three Trips That Show Why the Next Step Matters

1. I Was Already in Japan Without a Flight Home

In 2024, I arrived in Japan without a return ticket because none of the available options convinced me. I created several AwardFares alerts instead of repeating the same searches during the trip.

A few days later, an email showed two ANA Business Class seats from Tokyo Haneda to Frankfurt, followed by a Lufthansa connection to São Paulo. I confirmed the itinerary with SAS EuroBonus and booked both passengers for 114,000 points plus 2,238 SEK using an Amex companion voucher. The ANA Star Wars 787 trip report contains the original alert and booking confirmation.

What mattered was a precise search that kept running while I was already traveling.

For this kind of wait, the products make different promises. An AwardFares Live Alert automatically reruns the defined routes, dates, and loyalty programs. A Roame Super Alert watches criteria through SkyView’s route collection and refresh process. Roame’s alert can be much broader geographically; the AwardFares alert is the shape I used for a specific way home.

2. The JAL Flight Number Was Not Enough

For a trip around the world, I wanted Japan Airlines from New York to Tokyo specifically on its new Airbus A350-1000. The route also operated with the older 777 on some dates. A result for “JFK to HND on JAL” was therefore not a complete answer.

I used AwardFares to filter for the A350-1000 and found four or more seats in both Economy and Premium Economy. I booked Premium Economy through AAdvantage for 50,000 miles plus USD 5.60. The JAL A350 Premium Economy report preserves the exact route, airline, aircraft filter, Timeline View, and results.

The route and cabin were only two of the constraints. The aircraft and number of seats decided whether the result fit the trip.

Roame can filter results by loyalty program, stops, cabin percentage, points, fees, duration, and departure time. It does not currently advertise a Seat Map connected to a result, a separate schedule search, or the same aircraft focused tools. Travelers who only need the route and cabin may not care. I did on this trip.

3. The Round Trip Existed as Separate Pieces

On a later trip from Argentina to Sweden, two award seats had to line up on every segment. The outbound used Aerolíneas Argentinas and SAS in Economy through Madrid; the return used KLM Business Class through Amsterdam.

The mixed cabin round trip originally priced at 127,500 EuroBonus points plus 1,735 SEK per person. An expiring Amex companion voucher brought the points payment down to 63,750 per person. The Aerolíneas outbound report and KLM return report document both halves and their booking screenshots.

Neither screenshot is the trip by itself. The itinerary only works when both directions, every segment, and two seats remain compatible.

Roame focuses on one way award searches. Finding the outbound and return separately can improve flexibility and let a traveler mix airlines or programs. I agree with that search logic. I still need somewhere to organize the separate flights as one trip.

This is the gap Journey Planner fills. It saves candidate segments in travel order, keeps alternatives, and makes the proposed itinerary shareable. It does not price or ticket a round trip, protect separate tickets, or override the loyalty program’s rules. You still have to find the complete itinerary with the program that will issue it.

AwardFares vs. Roame: The Facts After the Stories

The program count deserves emphasis rather than a footnote. Roame advertises broader coverage. If it supports the only program connected to your points or route, coverage can decide the question before any feature comparison begins. Check AwardFares’ live program directory and Roame’s current program coverage rather than relying on a static number indefinitely.

Where Roame Has an Advantage

Roame can be useful in several situations:

• You need a usable live award search without paying.
• Roame covers a loyalty program that AwardFares does not.
• Broad regional discovery over a large window is the main job, making SkyView the relevant paid feature.
• You want hotel award search or a native iPhone app in the same service.
• A points Wallet, transfer guidance, and deal emails matter more to you than schedules, Seat Maps, or an itinerary workspace.

So I would not describe Roame as merely cached, or as a service without alerts. Both claims ignore major parts of its current product.

Where AwardFares Earns My Recommendation

AwardFares is my choice when the search conditions keep changing after the first result. I can move the dates without losing the route, wait for the right seats, check whether the aircraft still fits the trip, and preserve the outbound and return options together.

The three bookings above are the reason for that recommendation. They also show its limit: AwardFares found and organized the options, but SAS EuroBonus and AAdvantage determined the real availability, price, voucher rules, and final ticket.

Start by checking whether your program appears in the live AwardFares program directory. If it does, Basic is free and lets you preview recent availability. Gold adds live Search and alerts. Diamond searches five programs at once, includes unlimited Live Searches and Flex Alerts subject to abuse controls, and raises the other limits.

Plans, Promotions, and Free Access

These details were checked in August 2026. Promotions, taxes, plan limits, and regional checkout prices can change.

AwardFares

• Basic is free. It previews recent availability for one program and includes five Seat Map lookups per month. It does not run a live Search started by the user.
• Gold costs USD 9.99 monthly or USD 99 annually. It searches two programs together and currently includes 100 Live Searches per day, 30 Live Alerts, 100 Flex Alerts, 30 monthly Seat Map lookups, Journey Planner, and Flight Schedules.
• Diamond costs USD 19.99 monthly or USD 199 annually. It searches five programs together and includes 500 Live Alerts, 30 active searches, and 200 monthly Seat Map lookups. Live Search and Flex Alerts are unlimited, although limits can be imposed to prevent abuse.
• New customers receive a separate 24 hour paid plan trial after supplying a payment method. It renews unless canceled. Check the live AwardFares plans and trial terms.

Roame

• Community is free. It currently includes Live Search across up to 25 programs, a three day flexible search, SkyView Lite, Wallet, and deal emails.
• Friends of Roame had a promotional annual price of USD 109.99 in August 2026, reduced from USD 155.88. It adds a seven day flexible Live Search, full SkyView, search across several regions, 10 Super Alerts, SMS in the US and Canada, and up to USD 100 in hotel rebate credits each quarter.
• Inner Circle displayed a promotional USD 299.99 annual price, struck through from USD 959.88. It currently increases the Super Alert allowance to 100 and lists up to USD 10,000 in hotel rebate credits per year.
• Roame limits its consumer plans to noncommercial use and directs companies to enterprise sales.

Treat the Roame prices shown with a line through them as promotions, not permanent list prices. Confirm the current Roame prices before subscribing.

My Verdict

Roame includes free Live Search, broad regional discovery, hotel award search, and a native iPhone app. It may also cover a program that AwardFares does not support.

Even so, AwardFares is the tool I use when a result becomes part of a more difficult trip. The ANA, JAL, and Sweden bookings all changed after the first useful flight appeared. AwardFares gave me somewhere to continue the work instead of treating each result as the end of the search. That is why it remains my preferred Roame Travel alternative.

I still confirm the complete itinerary with the issuing loyalty program before transferring points or booking.
