United's 2027 Expansion: 10 New Cities and A321XLR Routes

New destinations across Europe, Africa, and Asia, five A321XLR routes, and a smarter standby option in the United app.

United's 2027 Expansion: 10 New Cities and A321XLR Routes

United announced its largest international expansion to date on August 25, plus a new app feature. The network expansion includes 10 cities that are new to United, three new routes to destinations already served by the airline, and the return of San Francisco-Tel Aviv. The first flights begin in March 2027.

Five of the routes will use United’s new Airbus A321XLR, with 20 lie-flat Polaris suites and 12 Premium Plus seats. If you want to use miles for Polaris, start with these five routes.

The app update applies when United rebooks a customer onto a later flight after a disruption. The customer can join the standby list for up to three earlier flights while keeping the confirmed replacement flight.

Key Takeaways

  • 10 new international cities: Okinawa, Toulouse, Luxembourg, Ljubljana, Olbia, Catania, Ibiza, Valencia, Marseille, and Terceira.
  • Three additional routes: Los Angeles-Osaka, Washington Dulles-Milan, and Denver-Paris.
  • One returning route: San Francisco-Tel Aviv resumes March 28, 2027.
  • Five A321XLR routes: Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia, and Marseille.
  • New app feature: Eligible customers rebooked after a disruption can stand by for up to three earlier United flights without giving up their confirmed itinerary.
  • Award search: Use AwardFares to compare dates, check the aircraft and cabin, and set an alert when the award you want is not available.

Newark receives eight of the 10 new destinations. San Francisco gets a nonstop flight to Okinawa, while Washington Dulles gets daily service to Toulouse.

Three More Routes and the Return of San Francisco-Tel Aviv

United is also adding three routes to destinations already on its network:

Route Start date Frequency Details
Los Angeles (LAX)-Osaka (KIX) Mar. 27 Daily Adds a second continental U.S. gateway to Osaka after San Francisco.
Denver (DEN)-Paris (CDG) May 27 Daily Adds Denver to United’s existing Paris gateways.
Washington Dulles (IAD)-Milan (MXP) May 28 3x weekly United says this will be the only nonstop between Washington and Milan.

United will resume San Francisco (SFO)-Tel Aviv (TLV) on March 28 with three flights per week.

The four European destinations added for summer 2026 (Split, Bari, Glasgow, and Santiago de Compostela) will return for summer 2027.

Check the Schedule Before Booking

The new routes are subject to government approval. Schedules and aircraft can change before departure. Check the operating aircraft again before transferring points or booking a premium cabin.

United’s New Airbus A321XLR

The A321XLR is a single-aisle aircraft designed for longer flights. United will use it to open routes that may not need the capacity of a Boeing 767 or 787.

United’s A321XLR has:

  • 20 United Polaris suites with lie-flat seats and privacy doors
  • 12 United Premium Plus seats
  • 4K OLED entertainment screens with Bluetooth
  • Free Starlink Wi-Fi for MileagePlus members
  • A self-service snack bar in Economy
  • Economy Plus seats with extra elbow room and access to a shared table across an open middle seat

The aircraft has 32 premium seats, compared with 16 on United’s Boeing 757-200.

The A321XLR is scheduled to begin flying domestic routes in September 2026. International service starts December 1 from Washington Dulles to Amsterdam and Dublin. In 2027, it will operate the new routes to Luxembourg, Toulouse, Ibiza, Valencia, and Marseille.

Search the Five A321XLR Routes With AwardFares

Use AwardFares Timeline View to scan the available dates, then open the result list to check the cabin, operating airline, aircraft, mileage price, and Saver label. Confirm the live price on United before transferring points or booking.

Make Sure You Have The Right Flight

Whenever you are searching for these specific flights, make sure to double check:

  • that the flight is operated by United and is nonstop
  • that the long segment is in the cabin you selected
  • that the aircraft is still listed as an Airbus A321XLR
  • the mileage price, taxes, and Saver or Non-Saver label
  • the number of seats available for the full group.

If the award you want is not available, set a Live or Flex Alert. Select the route, dates, cabin, passenger count, and any filters that are important to you. AwardFares will notify you when a matching result appears.

United may also release Saver seats to Star Alliance partners. The same United flight can have a different mileage price and different rules through Aeroplan, LifeMiles, or another program. Compare the complete itinerary and cancellation rules, then transfer points only after confirming that the seat is bookable. Our Star Alliance award guide explains the main options.

United App: Standby for Up to Three Earlier Flights

In a separate announcement on September 1, United added a new option for customers rebooked onto a later flight after a disruption.

This follows United’s December 2025 app update, which added Virtual Gate, lounge capacity information, and a new bag tracking interface.

Eligible customers can:

  1. Join the standby list for up to three earlier United flights to the same destination.
  2. Keep the confirmed replacement flight while United monitors the earlier flights.
  3. Receive a text when a seat becomes available.
  4. Choose whether to move to the earlier flight.

The feature is for eligible earlier United flights to the same destination after a disruption. It does not replace United’s normal same-day change and standby rules for other trips.

Our Take

United’s 2027 schedule adds nonstop access to 10 cities that were not previously on its network. Five of the routes also introduce the A321XLR, with lie-flat Polaris suites on a single-aisle aircraft.

Search the five A321XLR routes across the full operating period, check both directions, and set alerts for the cabin and number of seats you need. Always confirm the current aircraft and live mileage price with United before booking.

The new app feature covers a different stage of the trip. If United moves you to a later flight after a disruption, the app can now monitor up to three earlier alternatives without removing your confirmed replacement flight.
