What is Matmid?
Matmid is the loyalty program of El Al Israel Airlines, offering members the ability to earn and redeem points across El Al's network and select partner airlines. In 2023, Matmid underwent a significant overhaul, introducing a revenue-based earning system and a new elite status currency called Diamonds. These changes aim to provide a more flexible and rewarding experience for frequent flyers.
What's new with Matmid in 2026?
- New Diamond Program: Launched April 1, 2025, the updated program introduced new elite status thresholds (capped at a 30% increase from the prior structure). Status is now determined by Diamonds earned in the preceding 12 months.
- No Soft Landings: Members who don't requalify are downgraded directly to the appropriate tier based on Diamonds earned — the previous "soft landing" grace tier has been eliminated.
- FLY+ Benefits Program: Now live for Gold, Platinum, and Top Platinum members who are Executive members or FLY CARD holders. Choose from lounge passes, extra baggage, seat upgrades, and more based on Diamonds earned.
- Award Ticket Pricing: Award fares are updated every few months. Members can book tickets from Israel up to one year in advance.
- Point Validity: Matmid points remain valid as long as members earn at least one point every 18 months on an El Al flight, or charge at least NIS 5,000/month via FLY CARD during that period.
How many Matmid Points for a flight?
El Al utilizes a semi-dynamic award chart, with rates published for each destination and cabin class. These rates are updated every few months and can be used to book tickets up to one year in advance. One-way tickets are priced at half the round-trip rate.
Example redemptions:
| Route (Round-Trip) | Economy Points | Business Points |
|---|---|---|
| Tel Aviv – New York | 70,000 | 200,000 |
| Tel Aviv – London | 40,000 | 120,000 |
| Tel Aviv – Paris | 35,000 | 110,000 |
Note: Prices include seat selection and checked luggage. Seasonal rates apply, with summer (March 25 – October 31) and winter (November 1 – March 24) pricing.
How much are El Al Matmid points worth?
The estimated average value of an El Al Matmid point is between 1.0 and 2.5 cents (USD) per point, although in some cases it can exceed 3 cents. The value varies depending on the route, cabin class, season, and redemption availability. The best value is found by booking business class flights in advance on long-haul routes such as Tel Aviv-New York. The worst value is usually found on short flights within Europe or during peak periods with low availability.
