What is United MileagePlus?
MileagePlus is United Airlines' comprehensive loyalty program. Unlike many other programs, MileagePlus distinguishes itself through a multifaceted structure that integrates elite status tiers (Premier Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K), each offering progressively superior perks such as priority boarding, upgrades, and bonus earning potential. The program leverages its extensive Star Alliance and other airline partnerships to allow members to earn and redeem miles on a global scale.
MileagePlus goes beyond air travel, allowing members to accumulate miles through hotel stays, car rentals, and everyday purchases via the United MileagePlus Explorer Card. Unique to MileagePlus is its innovative use of dynamic pricing for award tickets, which, while controversial for potentially diluting the value of miles, offers flexibility in using miles for flights. The program also periodically offers lucrative promotions and opportunities for earning bonus miles.
What's new with MileagePlus in 2026?
- Status Thresholds Unchanged: United is keeping Premier status PQP thresholds the same as 2025, providing stability for members working toward Silver, Gold, Platinum, and 1K.
- Award Upgrades on Award Tickets: Starting February 1, 2026, MileagePlus members can use PlusPoints to upgrade award tickets — a significant expansion of PlusPoints flexibility that was previously limited to revenue tickets.
- New Mileage Earning Rules (April 2, 2026): United overhauled base mileage earning. Members without a United co-branded credit card now earn a flat 3 miles per dollar on United flights (up from a distance-based model). Basic Economy fares no longer earn miles. Members with an eligible United card retain the full earning rates with bonuses based on card tier.
- Family Account Linking: United launched a family mileage pooling feature, allowing members to link accounts and share miles with up to 7 family members — making it easier to pool miles for award flights.
- Premier 1K PlusPoints via Credit Card: Premier 1K members can now earn PlusPoints through spending on the United Club Infinite Card, adding a ground-based path to upgrade currency for the first time.
- Starlink Wi-Fi Now Live: After launching in early 2025, United's Starlink rollout is well underway across its regional and mainline fleets. MileagePlus members receive free inflight Wi-Fi when connected to Starlink-equipped aircraft.
How many United MileagePlus miles for a flight?
United Airlines MileagePlus program ditched its award chart in November 2019 https://www.united.com/en/us/fly/mileageplus/benefits/mileageplus-air-awards.html. This means that award prices are no longer fixed and can fluctuate depending on factors like cabin class, route, and demand. While this can make it more challenging to predict exactly how many miles you'll need for an award flight, there are still ways to find good deals.
This table outlines the typical ranges of miles needed for award flights across different cabin classes and regions, for decent redemptions, based on our historical search data.
| Cabin Class | Domestic (US) | Short-Haul International | Long-Haul International |
|---|---|---|---|
| Economy | 7,500 - 30,000 miles | 12,000 - 40,000 miles | 25,000 - 70,000 miles |
| Premium Economy (when available) | - | 25,000 - 60,000 miles | 60,000 - 100,000 miles |
| Business | 35,000 - 80,000 miles | 50,000 - 120,000 miles | 70,000 - 175,000 miles |
| First Class | - | - | 100,000 - 190,000 miles |
Notes:
- These are estimates and award prices can vary significantly depending on route, demand, and time of booking.
- Domestic (US) refers to travel within the 50 United States.
- Short-Haul International refers to flights to destinations within the same continent (excluding the US).
- Long-Haul International refers to flights to destinations on a different continent.
- United does not offer Premium Economy on all routes.
How much are United MileagePlus miles worth?
The exact value of a United MileagePlus mile depends on how you redeem it, but as a general estimate, it's around 1.2 cents each (USD). This means a 10,000 mile award flight would be worth roughly $120. However, you can potentially get much more value (or even less) depending on the cabin class, route and demand, and seat availability. Business and First Class redemptions generally provide a higher value per mile than Economy Class.
