AAdvantage Program Updates 2026: Cash + Miles Bookings & Premium Economy Upgrade Changes

American Airlines published its midyear AAdvantage program update covering three changes that matter: a cash and miles booking option is finally coming to American, complimentary upgrades are changing on transcon and Hawaii routes starting August 25, 2026, and the Loyalty Point Rewards menu is getting several new choices, from food and beverage coupons to New York Times subscriptions.

Book Flights with Cash and Miles (Coming Soon)

The headline redemption update: American will soon let U.S. AAdvantage members book flights with a combination of cash and miles. It launches on domestic U.S. flights on American (excluding Alaska and Hawaii), with more routes promised later.

This closes a long-standing gap with Delta (Miles + Cash) and JetBlue (Cash + Points), both of which have offered mixed-payment bookings for years. For members with a balance that isn’t quite enough for a full award, it finally makes those miles usable.

Will It Be Good Value?

The key detail to watch when this launches is the per-mile rate. Mixed-payment options at other airlines typically value miles well below what a good award redemption returns. And American hasn’t announced the details that determine whether this is worth using: the launch date, the conversion rate, minimum miles required, refund treatment, or whether the cash portion earns miles and Loyalty Points. Premium Economy Upgrade Change on Select Routes (August 25, 2026)

This is the change that matters most for status members. Starting August 25, 2026, complimentary upgrades from Main Cabin on select Hawaii and transcontinental flights will move you to Premium Economy, not Business.

You remain eligible for a complimentary upgrade to Business only if:

• You bought a Premium Economy ticket
• Premium Economy isn’t offered on your flight
• You bought an Instant Upgrade to Premium Economy

Systemwide upgrades are unaffected: on eligible fares, and subject to upgrade inventory, you can still use them to move from Business to First, or from Main Cabin or Premium Economy to the next cabin up.

What Happens to Existing Upgrade Requests

From August 25, American will begin updating existing Main Cabin upgrade requests to reflect Premium Economy on eligible flights, a process it says will take a few days. Already-confirmed upgrades to Business will be honored as long as your trip doesn’t change. Check your reservation in the app or on aa.com if you have one of these routes booked this fall.

On these nine routes, the best cabin a complimentary upgrade from Main Cabin can reach dropped from Business to Premium Economy. Executive Platinum members who regularly received Flagship Business upgrades on JFK-LAX will now be upgraded to Premium Economy instead, and some Premium Economy cabins include middle seats you may be assigned. The consolation is that Premium Economy has more seats than Business, so your odds of clearing some upgrade may improve. If Business is the goal, your options going forward are booking Premium Economy outright, using a systemwide upgrade, or booking the award directly.

Before August 25, if you hold a Main Cabin ticket with a pending upgrade on one of these routes: an already-confirmed Business upgrade will be honored as long as your trip doesn’t change, so avoid voluntary changes to those reservations, and check your seat assignment in the app once American finishes migrating upgrade requests.

New Loyalty Point Rewards

American keeps building out the Loyalty Point Rewards menu it introduced with the 2026 program. Here’s what’s new at each level.

The 60K bonus applies to spend with American Airlines Vacations, AAdvantage Hotels, AAdvantage eShopping, AAdvantage Dining, AAdvantage Cruises, and SimplyMiles for six months after registering.

What’s Gone

Two rewards were quietly removed as of March 1, 2026:

• The 30% Loyalty Point bonus at the 100K level
• The Bang & Olufsen gift choices at 250K, 400K, 550K, and 750K

The 100K bonus removal is the bigger loss: it was a meaningful accelerator for members working from Platinum Pro toward Executive Platinum on partner spending.

Centennial Luggage Tags

For American’s centennial year, members who earn 15,000 Loyalty Points can pick a centennial luggage tag as their reward, and everyone who qualifies for status from March 1, 2026 onward (Gold through Executive Platinum, plus Million Milers) can claim a limited-edition tag on request. Two conditions apply: you’ll need to validate your shipping address and agree to receive marketing from American to get one.

Million Miler Gifts Get Flexible

Later in 2026, Million Miler milestones switch from set rewards to a gift of your choice. Depending on the milestone, the options include Loyalty Points, gifting AAdvantage status, systemwide upgrades, and AAdvantage bonus miles. American hasn’t published the exact menu per milestone yet, but choice beats a fixed reward: a systemwide upgrade or a status gift for a family member is a more useful outcome for most lifetime flyers than a preset gift they didn’t pick.

FOX One Streaming and More Free Wi-Fi

• FOX One on board: Members get seven 24-hour passes to FOX One when connecting to inflight Wi-Fi on domestic flights, covering live sports (NFL, MLB), FOX series, and news.
• Free Wi-Fi expands: The AT&T-sponsored free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members now covers all single-aisle narrowbody aircraft (A319, A320, A321, 737), select 787-8 and 787-9 widebodies, and select regional aircraft, on more domestic and select international flights. American says more availability is coming.

The widebody and regional-jet expansion is the notable part. The narrowbody fleet has been covered since the rollout completed in May, but regional jets were the gap where members most often found themselves offline.

Miles for Events and the AAdvantage Exchange
