What is Flying Blue?
Flying Blue is the loyalty program of Air France-KLM, one of the world's largest airline groups, including several other airline partners. Launched in June 2005 and born from the merger of Air France's and KLM's previous loyalty schemes, Flying Blue offers features like earning miles based on the amount spent on tickets, a wide range of redemption options, and periodic Promo Rewards (or Promo Awards). Members of Flying Blue can redeem their accumulated miles for flight tickets, upgrades, extra baggage allowance, and other services. The program features different membership tiers, starting from Explorer and moving up to Silver, Gold, Platinum, and Ultimate, each offering progressively more benefits, including priority boarding, lounge access, and increased mileage accrual.
What's new with Flying Blue in 2026?
- Promo Rewards Finder: Flying Blue's monthly Promo Rewards offer discounted award tickets to various destinations. These promotions can provide significant savings, so regularly check our free tool here, or the Flying Blue website for the latest offers.
- Award Pricing Post-Devaluation: Following the January 2025 adjustment that raised mileage requirements by ~20%, Flying Blue stabilized pricing in 2026 while committing to 30% more available saver seats. One-way flights between North America and Europe now start at 25,000 miles in economy, 40,000 miles in premium economy, and 60,000 miles in business class.
- Subscribe to Miles: The monthly subscription plan — where you pay a fixed monthly fee to acquire a set number of Flying Blue miles — is fully live, offering a predictable way to top up your balance for planned redemptions.
- SAS Now Fully Integrated: SAS joined SkyTeam on September 1, 2024, and Flying Blue members can now fully earn and redeem miles on SAS flights across Scandinavia and beyond, with XP earning on SAS routes now stable.
- Dynamic Pricing: Flying Blue uses full dynamic pricing for award redemptions. Miles required can vary significantly by date, route, and demand — making flexibility and early booking essential for best value.
- Program Changes: Starting April 1, 2024, Flying Blue ceased awarding XP (Experience Points) and Elite bonuses on flights marketed and operated by non-SkyTeam airline partners. Members will continue to earn Miles and XP on flights operated by SkyTeam partners, Flying Blue participating carriers (Transavia and Aircalin), and on specific routes operated by Air Corsica.
How many Flying Blue miles for a flight?
Flying Blue, like many airline loyalty programs, has adopted a dynamic pricing policy for award tickets. This approach means that the number of miles required for a free flight is not fixed and can vary widely depending on demand for the flight, time of booking, and the ticket price in cash. As a result, during peak travel periods or for popular routes, you may find that more miles are required to book a flight. Conversely, during off-peak times or for less popular routes, you might find bargains that require fewer miles.
To get the best value from Flying Blue Miles under this system, we encourage you to book early, be flexible with travel dates, and regularly check availability (for example, using AwardFares alerts). Additionally, keeping an eye on the cash prices of flights can be a good strategy, as generally, a higher cash price means a higher mile price. The dynamic nature of pricing means that savvy travelers can sometimes find excellent value, but it also requires regular monitoring and flexibility in travel plans.
Generally, short-haul flights can start from as low as 5,000 miles (excluding taxes and surcharges), while long-haul flights may start at 25,000 miles. The value of Flying Blue Miles also fluctuates based on how you use them, but on average, they are estimated to be worth around 1.2 cents (€) each when redeemed.
The following table shows you what to expect (reasonable award prices) based on our search data.
