What is SAS EuroBonus?
SAS EuroBonus, the frequent flyer program of Scandinavian Airlines, was introduced in 1992 to reward travelers for their loyalty to SAS and its partners, including Star Alliance members. Members earn points for flights, hotel stays, car rentals, and more, which can be redeemed for a plethora of rewards ranging from free flights and upgrades to goods and services. The program offers tiered membership levels -Member, Silver, Gold, and Diamond- each providing a suite of benefits designed to enhance the travel experience, such as priority services and lounge access.
What's new with EuroBonus in 2025?
- Reintroduction of European Business Class: Starting October 1, 2025, SAS will reintroduce a true European Business Class on all international routes within Europe, replacing SAS Plus with a clearer premium product featuring blocked middle seats, enhanced meals, priority services, and full EuroBonus award integration.
- Alliance Transition Completed: As of September 1, 2024, SAS officially joined the SkyTeam alliance, departing from Star Alliance. EuroBonus members now enjoy benefits with SkyTeam partners, including airlines like KLM, Air France, and Vietnam Airlines.
- Expanded Route Network:
- Summer 2025: SAS is launching 15 new routes from Copenhagen, featuring destinations such as Seattle, Madrid, Milan-Linate, and Valencia.
- September 12, 2025: SAS will introduce direct flights to Seoul, enhancing connectivity to Asia.
- Domestic Enhancements in Sweden: Starting Summer 2025, Braathens Regional Airways (BRA) will operate several domestic routes for SAS within Sweden, increasing flight frequencies to cities like Visby, Gothenburg, and Umeå.
- EuroBonus Millionaire Challenge: To celebrate the SkyTeam integration, SAS introduced a promotion offering one million EuroBonus points to members who flew with at least 15 different SkyTeam airlines by December 31, 2024. This initiative saw enthusiastic participation from travelers worldwide.
- Enhanced Credit Card Offers: In Norway and Sweden, new SAS American Express cardholders can earn increased welcome bonuses of up to 90,000 EuroBonus points, providing more value for frequent travelers.
How many EuroBonus Points for a flight?
SAS has a zone-based, fixed price award chart. The number of EuroBonus points required for a free flight depends basically on the route (trip length), and class of service. Generally, short-haul flights within Europe might start from as low as 8,000 points for a one-way economy class ticket, whereas long-haul flights, especially in business class, could require 60,000 points or more one-way.
Occasionally (usually monthly), SAS announces a set of discounted destinations at 20%, 25%, 30% and even 50% off the regular prices in points. This means members might get one-way short-haul flights for as little as 3,000 points.
The following table shows you what to expect when booking (reasonable)
| Flight Type | Cabin | Points Range (SAS) |
|---|---|---|
| Short-haul | Economy | 8,000 - 50,000 |
| Premium Economy | 10,000 - 35,000 | |
| Long-haul | Economy | 30,000 - 60,000 |
| Premium Economy | 40,000 - 80,000 | |
| Business | 60,000 - 120,000 |
How much are SAS EuroBonus points worth?
The estimated average value of a SAS EuroBonus point is between 1.0 and 2.0 USD cents per point, although in some cases it can exceed 3 cents. The value varies depending on the route, class of service, and whether the points are used on SAS-owned flights or on Star Alliance or SkyTeam partner airlines. The best value is found by booking long-haul Business Class flights in advance, especially during promotions or using the fixed points option with partners. The worst value is usually found when redeeming points for products, non-air services, or short flights within Scandinavia in Economy Class.
