Finnair Plus Guide 2026: Award Chart, Avios & Sweet Spots

Finnair Plus offers several useful ways to spend Avios. Since Finnair adopted Avios as its currency in 2024, members have gained access to fixed award prices, a published minimum number of award seats on eligible flights, and a Helsinki hub connecting Europe with Asia and North America on modern A350s and A330s.

However, some redemptions became more expensive in 2026. Finnair raised the price of American Airlines partner awards by up to 50% in January, followed by increases of up to 110% for Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines awards in March, both without advance notice. The airline also added routes and award inventory: Toronto launched in May 2026, Nagoya joined the Asian network, and Melbourne via Bangkok starts in October 2026.

What is Finnair Plus?

Finnair Plus is the frequent flyer program of Finnair, a key member of the oneworld alliance. Membership is free, and your points can be used for award flights on Finnair itself and on premier carriers across the alliance, from Japan Airlines to Qatar Airways.

The biggest structural change came in 2024, when Finnair Plus switched its currency to Avios, the shared loyalty currency of The British Airways Club, Iberia Plus, Qatar Airways Privilege Club, and Aer Lingus AerClub. That single move made Finnair Plus part of a much bigger ecosystem: Avios earned with a British Airways credit card, an Iberia promotion, or a Qatar Airways flight can end up in your Finnair Plus account, and vice versa.

Why use Finnair Plus when several programs share the same currency? Two reasons. First, Finnair prices its own flights with a fixed zone chart, which can be lower than the British Airways price for the same seats. Second, Finnair publishes minimum award-seat numbers for eligible flights, making them easier to plan. We cover both below.

What’s New With Finnair Plus in 2026?

A lot has happened since our last major update to this guide. Here is the short version:

• Partner awards got more expensive, twice. Around January 2026, Finnair raised American Airlines partner award prices (economy within the continental US and Canada went from 11,000 to 16,500 Avios). Around March 2026, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines awards followed, with some Hawaii routes up 110%. Neither change was announced in advance. Full numbers in the partner chart section.
• Toronto is back. Finnair launched Helsinki to Toronto on May 4, 2026, with three weekly A330 flights, its first Canadian service since 2015. The route is subject to Finnair’s published long-haul award-seat commitment.
• Asia keeps growing. Nagoya joined the network with four weekly A350 flights, and Melbourne launches in October 2026 via Bangkok, giving Avios collectors a fresh way to reach Australia.
• British Airways renamed its program. The Executive Club became The British Airways Club on April 1, 2025. Same Avios, same 1:1 transfers to Finnair Plus, new name. If you hold a large Avios balance there, also read our analysis of the British Airways Avios devaluation.
• Buy-Avios promotions keep coming. Finnair ran a promotion with up to a 50% bonus on purchased Avios in May 2026. These sales recur several times a year; they are only worth it when you have a specific redemption in mind.
• Status match activity heated up. In early 2026, SAS EuroBonus offered a status match aimed squarely at Finnair Plus elites, with a booking window that closed on April 23, 2026. Expect more back-and-forth between the Nordic programs.
• JAL flights earn better. From May 1, 2026, premium-cabin tickets on Japan Airlines earn more Avios in Finnair Plus, a small but welcome improvement for oneworld flyers routing through Tokyo.

The Finnair Plus Award Chart (2026)

Finnair uses two different pricing models: a zone-based chart for its own flights (called Finnair Classic Awards), while partner awards follow separate partner award tables.

Finnair Classic Awards (Zone Chart)

For flights operated by Finnair, the price in Avios is fixed by zone. Any flight within a given zone costs the same amount of Avios, no matter the date or the cash fare. That predictability is rare in 2026, when most large programs have moved to dynamic pricing.

Finnair Award Chart: One-Way Prices

Prices are one-way, per passenger, as of our last check in mid-2026. Confirm the current chart on the official Finnair Classic award flight page before transferring points, since third-party sources occasionally quote slightly different long-haul figures.

Surcharges and Fees

In addition to Avios, Finnair adds a carrier-imposed surcharge to its award flights. These fees are not payable with Avios and range from €10 on short-haul flights to €150 for Melbourne in Business Class. Many other long-haul Business Class routes cost €100 or €120. These amounts are lower than the surcharges British Airways often applies to its own long-haul awards.

Finnair Partner Award Chart: The 2026 Devaluations

For partner airlines like Japan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, or American Airlines, Finnair Plus uses separate partner award tables. For years the standard advice was that Finnair’s partner prices were “similar to British Airways’, sometimes cheaper”. In 2026, that advice needs a big asterisk.

Here is what changed for American Airlines awards booked with Finnair Avios:

The practical takeaway: Finnair Plus is no longer a standout for short domestic US awards. It remains competitive, and sometimes clearly cheaper than British Airways, for long-haul partner awards on carriers like Cathay Pacific and Japan Airlines (see the sweet spots below).

Best Finnair Plus Sweet Spots in 2026

Even after the partner devaluations, Finnair Plus still has several redemptions that beat or match anything else in the Avios ecosystem. These are the ones we keep coming back to:

1. Free Zone 1 connections in the Nordics. As covered above, a flight within Finland and Northern Europe is included when attached to a long-haul Finnair award. Starting in Stockholm, Copenhagen, Oslo, or Tallinn instead of Helsinki costs no extra Avios. Try it with a Helsinki to Singapore search on AwardFares, then change the origin to Stockholm and compare.

2. Long-haul Business on Finnair flights at 62,500 Avios. Helsinki to New York, Los Angeles, Tokyo, or Singapore in Finnair’s A350/A330 Business Class costs 62,500 Avios one-way with moderate surcharges. Comparable dynamically priced awards on other carriers can cost 80,000 to 120,000 points. Finnair’s published seat minimums on eligible flights make these awards easier to plan.

3. Cathay Pacific long-haul via Finnair instead of British Airways. North America to Asia in Cathay Pacific Business Class prices at around 85,000 Avios one-way through Finnair Plus, versus around 108,000 Avios for the same seat through The British Airways Club, a saving of around 23,000 Avios per one-way seat. This can make Finnair Plus a useful booking option for Cathay Pacific awards.

4. Japan Airlines, long and short. JAL long-haul premium cabins use Finnair’s partner tables and can offer good value, while short flights within Japan cost roughly 8,500 Avios between cities such as Tokyo, Osaka, and Sapporo.

5. Doha, Dubai, and India in Business at 55,000 Avios. Zone 5 on Finnair’s own chart covers the Gulf and India at 55,000 Avios one-way in Business, undercutting most programs’ pricing to the region, and it connects neatly to Qatar Airways’ network beyond Doha.

How to Earn Avios in Finnair Plus

You can earn Finnair Plus Avios without flying Finnair. Here are the main options in 2026:

Flying. Finnair awards Avios based on ticket spend, with elite members earning at higher multipliers. oneworld partner flights credit to Finnair Plus as well, and since May 1, 2026, premium-cabin tickets on Japan Airlines earn at improved rates.

Credit cards and transferable points (US). US members have several ways to transfer points into Finnair Plus:

• Capital One miles transfer 1:1 to Finnair Plus, directly. This is the key US path, and it puts every Capital One earner one step from Finnair’s zone chart.
• Rove Miles transfer 100:100 (effectively 1:1). See our full Rove guide for how the program works and which airlines it covers.
• American Express has no direct US transfer partner in Finnair Plus. The workaround: transfer Membership Rewards to British Airways, Iberia, or Aer Lingus, then move the Avios across to Finnair Plus (see below). UK Amex cardholders can transfer to Finnair Plus directly at 1:1.
• Chase does not transfer to Finnair Plus directly either, but Ultimate Rewards transfers to British Airways, Iberia, and Aer Lingus all produce Avios you can then move across.

Buying Avios. Finnair sells Avios with recurring bonus promotions, including up to a 50% bonus in May 2026. Purchased Avios usually make sense only for a specific redemption you have already found; calculate the cost per Avios before buying.

Co-branded cards. In Finland, Finnair Visa Credit earns 1-1.8 Avios per eligible euro based on Finnair Plus tier and 500 tier points in a calendar month with at least €1,500 in eligible purchases. Finnair Visa Credit Light earns 0.5 Avios per euro and no tier points. The cards are not available to US residents.

Moving Avios Between Programs

Because Avios is a shared currency, you can move points between Finnair Plus and supported Avios programs at a 1:1 rate, for free, once your accounts are linked. The names on the accounts must match, and your Finnair Plus account must be at least 30 days old before you link it.

Here is how the network fits together in 2026:

• The British Airways Club (renamed from Executive Club on April 1, 2025): direct 1:1 transfers to and from Finnair Plus.
• Iberia Plus: linked into the same Avios network, with transfers at 1:1.
• Qatar Airways Privilege Club: You cannot move Avios directly between Finnair Plus and Privilege Club. Transfers route through The British Airways Club: Qatar to BA, then BA to Finnair (or the reverse). The rate remains 1:1 and each transfer is free, but the process takes two steps. • Aer Lingus AerClub and Vueling Club: Finnair’s own FAQ has listed these as linkable Avios programs as well; check the current list in your Finnair Plus account before planning a multi-hop transfer.

This flexibility means you should think of your Avios as one balance across programs, and book through whichever program prices your specific flight cheapest. Finnair Plus Elite Status: Tiers and Benefits

Finnair Plus uses tier points earned from eligible flights, Finnair Visa Credit spending and Avios exchanges to determine status. Card and exchanged tier points do not count toward Platinum Lumo’s separate Finnair-flight minimum. The ladder in 2026:

Silver provides priority check-in and extra baggage on Finnair. Gold (oneworld Sapphire) adds Business Class lounge access and priority boarding across the alliance. Platinum (Emerald) includes First Class lounge access where available, and Platinum Lumo is Finnair’s highest tier.

Two housekeeping notes on points:

• Avios in Finnair Plus expire after 18 months of inactivity. Earning or spending Avios extends their validity, but transfers between loyalty-program accounts do not. Check the expiry date in your Finnair Plus account.
• Status helps award travel too: higher tiers earn Avios at better multipliers, which shortens the path to the next redemption.

If you hold Finnair Plus status, check current competitor offers. SAS EuroBonus ran a status match campaign targeting Finnair elites in 2026, and similar offers may return.

When Does Finnair Release Award Seats?

Finnair opens award bookings 360 days before departure. If you want peak-season Business Class to Asia or North America, searching close to the release window gives you the best chance of finding the published minimum seats.

Finnair publishes minimum award-seat numbers for eligible flights:

• Within Europe: at least 4 award seats in total.
• Long-haul flights: at least 4 seats in Economy, 2 in Premium Economy, and 2 in Business Class.

The policy excludes flights where tour operators reserve most seats, flights to and from Doha, and flights that do not depart from or arrive at Helsinki Airport. Premium Economy and Business award seats also share their quotas with upgrades.

This policy makes eligible Finnair Classic award flights more predictable. When Toronto joined the network in May 2026, the Helsinki route qualified for the long-haul seat commitment. A New York to Helsinki search around the release window is a useful way to check availability.

How to Find Finnair Plus Award Availability (Step-by-Step)

Knowing the chart is useful, but you still need to find available seats. Here is how to search Finnair and its oneworld partners with AwardFares.

1. Go to AwardFares

Creating an account is optional, but it’s free and gives you access to more features. If you haven’t yet, sign up for an account.

2. Select the Frequent Flyer Program

In the Frequent Flyer Program picker, select Finnair Plus.

3. Add a Route

Enter your departure and arrival airports in the From and To fields. AwardFares searches flights on Finnair as well as its oneworld partners. In this example, we search for flights between Helsinki (HEL) and New York (JFK).

4. Explore Travel Dates

If you have a specific travel date, add it using the Calendar field. AwardFares will immediately show available flights for that day.

If your dates are flexible, use the Timeline View. This gives you a week-by-week or month-by-month overview of award availability, so you can find suitable dates without clicking through the calendar one day at a time. The coloured bars represent different cabin classes.

5. Sort by Price

Click the column headers (Eco, Prem, Biz, First) to sort the flight list by the lowest Avios price for each cabin. This surfaces the cheapest options instantly, which matters most on partner routes where prices vary by distance band.

You can also use the Max Price filter to narrow down results and see only the awards that fall within your Avios budget. After the 2026 partner price increases, this is the fastest way to filter out awards that no longer make sense.

6. Add More Filters (Optional)

Refine your search further by filtering for a specific number of stops (e.g., nonstop), a particular airline, aircraft type, or even a flight number. This is especially useful for isolating partner awards, such as a JAL flight from Tokyo to Helsinki, or for tracking Finnair’s A350 routes specifically.

7. Explore Results

Skim through the flight list to see all the different options and seats available. When you are ready, tap on any flight to expand and see more details, including the operating carrier and cabin breakdown.

8. Set an Alert for Sold-Out Dates

If your route or date shows nothing today, don’t keep refreshing manually. Set a live alert for the route and cabin you want, and AwardFares will notify you the moment a seat opens up. This is especially effective around schedule changes and the 360-day release window.

9. Book with Finnair

Once you’ve found a suitable flight, click the Book button.

AwardFares will redirect you to the Finnair website with your search details pre-filled. Simply log in to your Finnair Plus account and make sure “Award flights” is selected to complete the booking.

Why Searching on Finnair.com Isn’t Enough

Finnair’s own website is fine for booking, but it is a slow tool for finding. You can only search one day and one route at a time, only six partners are bookable online, and there is no way to sort a month of results by price or get notified when a seat appears.

Like other Avios programs, Finnair searches can occasionally show partner space that fails at booking. This is called phantom or ghost availability and can affect Cathay Pacific awards in particular. Read our guide to phantom award availability and confirm the seat before transferring points.

Finnair Award Booking Rules and Policies

Keep these booking rules in mind. Numbers marked “as of our last check” are Finnair policies we last confirmed in mid-2026; verify them at booking time.

• Book online to save. Booking an award flight through Finnair’s customer service has cost an extra 500 Avios for one-way and 1,000 Avios for return bookings (as of our last check). Book online whenever the partner allows it.
• Baggage is included. Finnair Classic award tickets have included one checked bag of up to 23 kg (as of our last check).
• Book in advance. Award seats are released roughly 360 days prior to departure; see the release timing section.
• One partner per award. You can combine a Finnair flight with one partner airline on the same award ticket (e.g., Finnair plus American Airlines). You cannot combine two or more partner airlines (e.g., American Airlines plus Japan Airlines) on the same award.
• Stopovers. One stopover has been permitted on round-trip intercontinental awards, which pairs nicely with a free Helsinki stop on the way to Asia.
• Mixed cabins price at the highest cabin. If your journey includes multiple cabin classes (e.g., Economy and Business), the entire award is priced at the higher cabin’s rate. Watch for this on connecting itineraries.
