Velocity Frequent Flyer Guide 2026: Points & Rewards

Velocity Frequent Flyer has changed more in the last 18 months than in the previous decade. Qatar Airways bought 25% of Virgin Australia, Virgin Australia started flying long-haul to Doha again, the Etihad partnership ended, reward pricing was overhauled in January 2025, and two new status levels (Forever Gold and Platinum Plus) arrived in October 2025. If you last looked at Velocity in 2024, some of the information you remember is now outdated.

Velocity is also more useful in several important ways. Domestic Reward Seats start at 5,900 points one-way, Qatar Airways Qsuite can be booked with Velocity Points, and eligible Virgin Australia Doha fares can be upgraded with points. This guide explains the current award charts, partners, status levels, earning options, and how to find reward seats with AwardFares.

What is Velocity Frequent Flyer?

Velocity Frequent Flyer is Virgin Australia’s loyalty program. You earn Velocity Points (the currency you spend on flights, upgrades, and other rewards) and Status Credits (which determine your elite tier) whenever you fly Virgin Australia or its partners, use a linked credit card, or shop with program partners.

Velocity uses a distance-based reward table for flights, so the number of points you need depends on how far you fly and the cabin you pick, not on the cash fare that day. That predictability is one of the program’s biggest strengths compared to fully dynamic programs, and it makes planning redemptions much easier.

Velocity is often confused with two other programs, so it helps to understand the differences.

Is Velocity the Same as Qantas Frequent Flyer?

No. Velocity belongs to Virgin Australia and Qantas Frequent Flyer belongs to Qantas, and the two are direct competitors. They have completely separate points, partners, and status levels. For example, Emirates partners with Qantas, not with Velocity, so you cannot redeem Velocity Points on Emirates. Our Qantas Frequent Flyer guide explains the other program.

Is Virgin Atlantic the Same as Virgin Australia?

Also no. Virgin Atlantic is a UK airline with its own program (Flying Club), and Virgin Australia is an Australian airline with Velocity. They share the Virgin brand and they partner with each other, so you can redeem Velocity Points on Virgin Atlantic flights, but they are separate airlines with separate programs and separate points.

How to Join Velocity (and Who Can)

Joining Velocity is free and takes a couple of minutes on the Velocity sign-up page. There are no membership fees at any point, and you start at the Red tier immediately.

The one catch is residency. Velocity restricts membership to residents of Australia, New Zealand, and a limited list of other eligible countries. The list has changed over time, so check the sign-up page for the current version before you plan your points strategy around the program. If you live in Australia or New Zealand, you’re fine.

Here’s how to join:

1. Go to join.velocityfrequentflyer.com.
2. Enter your personal details and confirm your country of residence.
3. Verify your email to receive your membership number.
4. Add your Velocity number to any existing Virgin Australia bookings so the flights earn points and Status Credits.

What’s New With Velocity in 2026?

Several important Velocity changes took effect after mid-2024. This is a summary of the changes that still matter in 2026:

• Qatar Airways owns 25% of Virgin Australia. The stake was announced in October 2024, cleared by the Australian government in February 2025, and received final ACCC authorisation in March 2025. We covered the deal in detail in our Qatar-Virgin Australia analysis.
• Virgin Australia flies long-haul again. VA launched Doha flights on wet-leased Qatar Airways 777-300ERs: Sydney on 12 June 2025, Brisbane on 19 June 2025, Perth on 26 June 2025, and Melbourne on 1 December 2025. Velocity members earn and redeem on all of them.
• Qsuite upgrades with points. From 1 July 2025, Velocity members can use points to upgrade eligible economy fares on Virgin Australia flights VA1-VA29 between Australia and Doha. Red and Silver members need an Economy Flex fare; Gold, Forever Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Plus members can upgrade Economy Choice or Flex fares, subject to availability. • The 21 January 2025 repricing. Domestic economy lead-in pricing dropped to 5,900 points one-way, while partner reward pricing increased on selected routes and cabins. See Velocity’s official Reward Seat tables and our Velocity changes post.
• Spend-based earning on Virgin Australia flights. From 2 April 2025, points earning on VA flights moved to a spend-based model: 4 Velocity Points per $1 for Red members, scaling up to 8 points per $1 for Platinum.
• Etihad is gone. The Velocity-Etihad partnership ended on 1 June 2025, with last bookings on 31 May 2025. Qatar Airways is the replacement for Middle East and Europe redemptions.
• New status levels from 1 October 2025. Forever Gold requires 12,000 lifetime Status Credits, including at least 9,000 earned on eligible Virgin Australia-marketed or operated flights flown by the member. Platinum Plus requires 2,000 Status Credits within 12 months, including at least 1,500 eligible Virgin Australia Status Credits. Status Credit earning also became spend-based on eligible Virgin Australia fares: 1 per $12 on Choice, Flex, Group, and Business fares, or 1 per $24 on Lite fares.
• Reward seat search in ChatGPT. On 10 June 2026, Virgin Australia launched flight search in ChatGPT. It can search Virgin Australia-operated Reward Seats across multiple dates, identify lower-priced periods, and compare Points, Points + Pay, and cash fares. Partner Reward Seats are not currently included. We compare the options later in this guide.

The Velocity Award Chart (2026 Pricing)

Velocity uses a distance-based award chart (here’s how award charts work): the points price depends on the flight distance band and cabin, with separate tables for Virgin Australia flights and groups of partner airlines. The tables below reflect pricing after the 21 January 2025 changes and come from Velocity’s official Reward Seat tables.

Virgin Australia Domestic Reward Seats

Prices are one-way. Domestic economy prices vary within each band; taxes, fees, and carrier charges apply in addition to the points shown.

That 5,900-point lead-in covers routes like Sydney to Melbourne, one of the busiest city pairs in the world. Even longer domestic sectors stay reasonable in points terms.

Virgin Australia International (Including Trans-Tasman)

Prices are one-way per passenger, before taxes and carrier charges.

Partner Reward Seats: Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines

Partner Reward Seats: Air Canada, ANA, South African Airways, and Selected HNA Group Airlines

Partner Reward Seats: United Airlines and Virgin Atlantic

All partner prices are the minimum required for a one-way trip on the most direct routing. Connections, mixed cabins, stopovers, or multiple airlines can increase the price. Taxes, fees, and carrier charges vary by operating airline, so always confirm the final total at checkout.

How the January 2025 Repricing Changed Popular Routes

To see what the repricing did in practice, here are the headline before-and-after examples for one-way Business Class partner awards:

Best Velocity Sweet Spots in 2026

Despite the partner repricing, Velocity still has several useful redemptions. These are the options we would check first:

• Domestic economy from 5,900 points: Short domestic flights like Sydney to Melbourne can start at 5,900 points one-way, plus taxes and charges. This can be useful when cash fares are high around holidays and events.
• United short-haul in the US for 8,500 points: United-operated flights under 600 miles cost as little as 8,500 Velocity Points in economy, plus taxes and charges. This is a low-cost way to use an Australian points balance for travel within the US.
• Virgin Australia domestic Business for 15,500 points: The shortest band prices Business at 15,500 points one-way, a small premium over peak economy pricing on the same routes.
• Qatar Airways Qsuite to Doha and Europe: The longest Qatar Airways Business Class band costs 158,500 points one-way. Routes such as Sydney to Rome can price at about 158,000 points. It costs more than before January 2025, but Qsuite remains one of the strongest Business Class options available through Velocity. Virgin Australia’s own Doha flights also use Qatar Airways aircraft with Qsuite.
• Trans-Tasman from 7,900 points: Australia to New Zealand starts at 7,900 points one-way in economy, a solid alternative when cash fares are high.

What Can 100,000 Velocity Points Book?

This table shows how far a balance of 100,000 Velocity Points can go at the published minimum prices. Availability is limited, and taxes, fees, and carrier charges are extra.

Which Points Option Should You Use?

Velocity offers more than one way to pay for a flight. They do not provide the same value.

For most travelers, the order is simple: check Reward Seats first, compare the full cash component, and use Points + Pay only after checking the value you would receive. See Velocity’s official comparison for the rules attached to each fare type.

Redeeming on Qatar Airways (Including Virgin Australia’s Doha Flights)

The Qatar Airways relationship is one of the main reasons Velocity is useful in 2026. Here is what you can do with it:

Book Qatar Airways flights with Velocity Points. Qatar’s network from Australia connects through Doha to Europe, Africa, and the Middle East, and reward seats use the partner table above. The longest distance band costs 158,500 points one-way in Business or 223,000 in First on routes where First Class is offered.

You can also book Virgin Australia’s own Doha flights with points. VA’s Doha services (Sydney from 12 June 2025, Brisbane from 19 June 2025, Perth from 26 June 2025, Melbourne from 1 December 2025) operate with wet-leased Qatar Airways 777-300ERs, and Velocity members earn and redeem points on them like any VA international flight.

From 1 July 2025, Velocity members can also use points to upgrade eligible economy fares to Qsuite Business on Virgin Australia flights VA1-VA29 between Australia and Doha. Red and Silver members need an Economy Flex fare; Gold, Forever Gold, Platinum, and Platinum Plus members can upgrade Economy Choice or Flex fares. Upgrades depend on availability, so confirm that your fare is eligible before relying on this option.

One thing that does not exist: a points transfer bridge between Velocity and Qatar’s own Avios currency. You redeem Velocity Points directly for Qatar flights; you cannot convert Velocity Points into Avios or vice versa.

How to Earn Velocity Points

You can earn Velocity Points from flying, credit cards, bank and hotel transfers, and everyday shopping partners. These are the main options:

Flying

Since 2 April 2025, earning on Virgin Australia flights is spend-based: Red members earn 4 Velocity Points per $1 of eligible spend, scaling up with status to 8 points per $1 for Platinum. Partner flights (Qatar Airways, Singapore Airlines, United, and the rest) still earn based on fare class and distance flown, so check the earn table for your specific airline before crediting.

Credit Cards and Points Transfers

For most members, credit cards are the fastest way to build a balance. You can earn Velocity Points directly with a Velocity-linked credit card or earn flexible bank points and transfer them. Common transfer options include:

Bank and hotel transfer ratios vary by country, account, and card. Confirm the current rate with your issuer and Velocity’s official partner directory before transferring.

The KrisFlyer Bridge

Velocity has a two-way transfer partnership with Singapore Airlines KrisFlyer. The conversion rate in either direction is 1.55 points or miles in the sending program for 1 point or mile in the receiving program. In practical terms, 15,500 Velocity Points become 10,000 KrisFlyer miles, while 15,500 KrisFlyer miles become 10,000 Velocity Points. Transfers require at least 5,000 points or miles and cannot be reversed.

Moving points to KrisFlyer can provide access to additional Singapore Airlines award inventory, especially premium-cabin seats that are not made available through Velocity. However, you lose value in the conversion, so confirm the KrisFlyer seat and total price before transferring. See Velocity’s airline transfer rules for the current terms.

Everything Else

Velocity also earns from everyday life in Australia: supermarket loyalty (Flybuys transfers), hotel stays, car rentals, online shopping through the program’s partners, and more. None of these will fund a Business Class trip on their own, but they keep your account active, which matters for points expiry.

Velocity Credit Cards

Velocity has many credit-card partners in Australia. Most major banks issue cards that earn Velocity Points directly, while American Express Membership Rewards points can be transferred to Velocity. When comparing cards, focus on:

• Sign-up bonus: The big bonuses are worth more than years of everyday earn, and they can cover a one-way premium cabin partner award on their own.
• Earn rate per $1: Direct-earn Velocity cards pay a fixed rate per dollar; flexible-points cards (like Amex Membership Rewards) add the option of transferring elsewhere if Velocity devalues.
• Benefits that offset the fee: Companion tickets, lounge passes, and travel credits can outweigh the annual fee if you use them.

Card offers and fees change frequently, so check the current terms with the issuer. A useful approach is to choose a card whose bonus provides enough points for a specific trip, then compare the bonus with the award chart above.

Velocity Airline Partners in 2026

The partner roster changed materially in 2025, so older lists may no longer be accurate. Based on our July 2026 cross-check of Velocity’s official airline partner directory, the current options are:

Velocity’s partner roster can change. Check the official partner page and the relevant airline’s earn table before booking.

Remember these two exclusions:

• Etihad Airways is no longer a partner. The partnership ended on 1 June 2025, with last bookings accepted on 31 May 2025. For the Middle East and Europe, Qatar Airways is the replacement.
• Hawaiian Airlines is no longer a partner. Velocity’s partnership with Hawaiian ended on 1 July 2025.
• Emirates is not a Velocity partner. Emirates partners with Qantas. If someone promises you Emirates flights with Velocity Points, they’re thinking of the wrong program.

Velocity Status: Red to Platinum Plus (and Forever Gold)

Velocity has four standard membership levels from Red through Platinum, the higher Platinum Plus level, and Forever Gold lifetime recognition. The current thresholds are shown in Status Credits (SC):

Silver through Platinum Plus qualification is based on the member’s Status Credit balance from the previous 365 days, while retention is measured within the member’s Benefit Period. Forever Gold is calculated separately from 1 February 2013. Eligible VA SC means Status Credits earned on eligible Virgin Australia-marketed or operated flights flown by the member. Family Pooling, partner, Flybuys, and credit-card Status Credits do not count toward these minimum VA amounts. See Velocity’s official status requirements.

How you earn Status Credits also changed in 2025:

• Spend-based earning: For eligible Virgin Australia domestic and short-haul international flights booked from 2 April 2025, Choice, Flex, Group, and Business fares earn 1 Status Credit per $12 of eligible spend. Lite fares earn 1 Status Credit per $24. The Eligible Sectors requirement was removed.
• Partner earning reduced: From 1 October 2025, Status Credit earning on partner airlines was reduced, so Virgin Australia-operated and marketed flights are generally the fastest route to status.
• Benefit trims: Gold’s Guaranteed Economy Reward Seat benefit was removed as part of the same round of changes.
• Retention offers: Velocity has introduced points-based status retention offers, letting some members extend their tier by redeeming points when they fall short on Status Credits. Offers are targeted, so don’t build a plan around receiving one.

Can you simply buy Status Credits? No. The points-based retention offers above are the closest option, and they are targeted invitations rather than a standard purchase. The most reliable ways to qualify are concentrating eligible paid travel on Virgin Australia and using Family Pooling, which we cover next.

Family Pooling and Points Transfers

Family Pooling remains one of Velocity’s most useful features. Here is how it works:

• One beneficiary and up to five contributors: A pool can contain up to six family members who live at the same address.
• Maximum of two adults: A pool can include no more than two adults aged 18 or older and up to four children under 18.
• Choose what to pool: Contributors can send points only, or both points and Status Credits, to the beneficiary.
• Only new activity is pooled: Family Pooling starts after it is set up and is not backdated. Existing balances stay in each member’s account.
• Pooled Status Credits have limits: They can help the beneficiary reach the overall status threshold, but they do not count toward the minimum Status Credits that the member must personally earn on eligible Virgin Australia flights.

Family Points Transfer is a separate option for moving an existing balance. Members can make up to four transfers per calendar year, with each transfer ranging from 5,000 to 125,000 points, to an eligible family member. See Velocity’s Family Benefits page for the current definitions and rules.

If your household plans to use one combined balance, set up the pool before anyone earns the points or Status Credits you want to combine. Existing balances will not move into the pool automatically.

When Are Velocity Reward Seats Released?

Virgin Australia opens its booking window (and releases Velocity Reward Seats) around 331 days before departure. Partner airlines release their own award space on their own schedules, which vary by carrier.

Two practical implications:

1. Book early for peak dates. School holidays, Christmas, and major events see reward seats vanish quickly once the window opens.
2. Check late too. Airlines often release additional reward space in the final weeks before departure when cash sales are slower, so a route that looked empty months ago can reopen.

Step-by-Step: How To Find Velocity Reward Seats with AwardFares

These are the steps we use to find Velocity availability on Virgin Australia and partner airlines without sharing any Velocity login details. AwardFares will never ask for your Velocity credentials.

1. Go to AwardFares

Creating an account is optional, but registration is free and provides access to additional features. You can create a free account.

2. Choose Velocity in the Loyalty Program Field

Select Virgin Australia Velocity from the dropdown menu to search for your award flight.

3. Enter a Route

Add your origin and destination airports, and AwardFares will search for available award flights, including those with stops. In this example, we search for flights between Sydney (SYD) and Los Angeles (LAX).

4. Explore Dates for Your Flights

Either input specific dates or use the Timeline View to explore availability over different periods. This view helps you easily compare the availability and class of service across various days.

In addition, you can tap anywhere on the flight to display more details in an expanded view, such as aircraft type, and even get the current seat maps to see which seats are free or occupied.

5. Sort by Price

Tap the different header columns to sort the results by price. Use the Eco, Prem, Biz, and First class tags to find cheap awards across multiple dates, itineraries, and airlines. Here’s an example of the cheapest redemptions in Economy Class:

6. Filter the Results

Use the filters to narrow the results by non-stop flights, specific airlines (for example, Qatar Airways when looking for Qsuite), cabin class, or a maximum points price. This makes it easier to identify the relevant options on a busy route.

7. Set an Alert

Can’t find seats on your preferred dates? Set up an alert and AwardFares will notify you when reward seats appear. With a Gold or Diamond membership, you can monitor multiple routes at once, including routes with Qsuite.

When to Use AwardFares Instead of VirginAustralia.com or ChatGPT

Virgin Australia’s website is the place to confirm and book a Reward Seat. Its ChatGPT flight search, launched on 10 June 2026, can search Virgin Australia-operated Reward Seats across multiple dates, identify lower-priced periods, and compare Points, Points + Pay, and cash fares. AwardFares is more useful when you need partner-airline coverage, alerts, a visual calendar, or more planning tools.

The main difference is scope. Virgin Australia’s tools are useful for checking and booking its flights, while AwardFares helps you explore dates and routes, monitor availability, and include partners such as Qatar Airways and Singapore Airlines in the same planning process.

Velocity Booking Rules and Policies

These are the main booking rules to know:

• Points + Pay: Any Seat with Points + Pay reduces the cash fare by $15 for every 2,500 points used, equal to about 0.6 cents per point. It provides access to more seats than Reward Seats but usually gives lower value for your points.
• Taxes and carrier charges: All reward bookings attract taxes and carrier charges on top of points. Domestic VA charges are small (around $10 AUD); partner charges vary widely, with Qatar Airways at the expensive end. Always compare the total cost.
• Changes and cancellations: Reward bookings can generally be changed or cancelled for a fee, with points redeposited. Fees and rules differ between VA and partner bookings, so check the conditions shown at booking.
• Points expiry: Most qualifying earning, redemption, eligible inbound transfer, and Points Booster activity extends the expiry date by 24 months. Points received through Family Pooling, Family Member Points Transfer, or inheritance may extend it by only one month. Expired points cannot be reinstated.
• Residency: As covered in the join section, membership is limited to residents of eligible countries.

Get the Most Out of Your Velocity Points

If you last used Velocity a few years ago, the 2026 program is significantly different: domestic Reward Seats now start at 5,900 points, Qatar Airways and Qsuite can be booked with points, and Forever Gold provides lifetime recognition. The most useful Reward Seats are limited, so flexibility and early searches still matter.
