American Airlines now lets AAdvantage members pay for a flight with a mix of cash and miles. The option was announced on October 2, 2026 and is rolling out on aa.com and the American app over several weeks. You need at least 500 miles, and it works on American flights within the contiguous 48 U.S. states.
This means you no longer need a full award, or even an award seat, to use your miles. But American doesn’t say what a mile is worth on the new slider, and on many dates a regular award still gets you more for the same miles. So make sure to check the award price in AwardFares first.
We also cover some recent news like the new automatic seat changes in the American app, Alaska joining its joint businesses, a new codeshare with STARLUX, Starlink on every mainline jet, and a new Admirals Club in Charlotte.
How The New AAdvantage Cash and Miles Works
Cash and miles starts from a normal cash booking. American’s cash and miles page tells you not to select Redeem miles when you search.
- Log in and search for flights with cash.
- Choose your flights and go to checkout.
- Accept or decline the trip insurance offer.
- Move the slider to choose how many miles to apply.
- Pay the rest with a card.
If you don’t see the slider yet, it may not have reached your account.

Cash and Miles vs. an AAdvantage Award
A cash and miles booking is a cash ticket that you pay for partly with miles. An award uses the award seats American releases, at prices that change by date. Here’s how they compare, based on American’s terms:
| Cash and Miles | AAdvantage Award | |
|---|---|---|
| Needs award seats | No | Yes |
| Routes | American flights within the contiguous 48 states | American and partner flights worldwide |
| Fares | Any fare except Basic Economy | Award seats only |
| Miles needed | From 500 | The full award price |
| Value per mile | Not published. 0.73-0.94 cents in our test | Depends on the award price and cash fare |
| Earns miles and Loyalty Points | Yes, on the cash part | No |
| Changes | Not possible. Cancel and book again | Possible on most awards |
| If you cancel | Miles back. Cash back or as credit, depending on the fare | Miles back on most awards |
You also need a U.S. home address in your AAdvantage account (Puerto Rico and U.S. territories count). Taxes and fees are always paid in cash.
One detail is easy to miss: if you fly the first flight of a connecting trip and skip the second, American won’t return the miles for the flight you didn’t take.
What Is a Mile Worth on the Slider?
American doesn’t publish a rate. Its terms say it can change by destination, itinerary, flight, and the miles in your account.
On our tests, as you can see below, AA171 from New York (JFK) to Los Angeles in Business on November 18, 2026, the fare was $1,448.40. Applying 24,000 miles lowered the cash due to $1,272.03. That’s $176.37 saved, or 0.73 cents per mile.

That’s less than American gives you for an Admirals Club One-Day Pass ($79 or 7,900 miles, or 1 cent per mile). Check the numbers for your own booking:
- Slider: cash saved ÷ miles applied × 100
- Award: (cash fare − award taxes) ÷ award miles × 100
The higher number is the better use of your miles. On AA171, a Business award would beat our slider result at anything under about 196,000 miles plus $5.60. In our October search below, Business awards on this route cost 312,500 miles. At that price, the award would be worth only about 0.46 cents per mile, and cash and miles would be the better choice. You would also earn miles and Loyalty Points on the cash part.
How to Use AwardFares Before You Move the Slider
1. Find the Award Price
Search your route with American and AAdvantage selected, for example New York to Los Angeles or Chicago to Miami. American uses dynamic award pricing, so prices can change a lot from day to day. Timeline View shows a full month at once, so you can spot the cheap dates.

2. Set an Alert if the Award Is Too Expensive
If you have time before your trip, save a Live Alert with your route, dates, and the most miles you want to spend. AwardFares lets you know when a cheaper award appears. If the price doesn’t drop, you can still use cash and miles closer to your trip.

3. Check Atmos Rewards for the Same Flight
Cash and miles only works with AAdvantage miles. If you also have Atmos Rewards points, search the same American flight with Atmos selected. The price can be lower, or Atmos may show seats when AAdvantage doesn’t.

4. Save Your Miles for Bigger Trips
Cash and miles can’t book international flights or partner airlines, and that’s where miles are worth the most. I booked Miami to Papeete for 40,000 AAdvantage miles plus $5.60 per person, when the cash price was $3,371. That’s more than 8 cents per mile, compared with 0.73 cents in our slider test.

When Cash and Miles Makes Sense
- You have a small balance. A few thousand miles won’t get you an award, but they can lower your next fare.
- The award is expensive on the date you need, and the slider gives you more per mile.
- There are no award seats on the flight you want.
- You’re earning status. The cash part earns Loyalty Points. An award doesn’t.
Be more careful if your plans may change. An award is easier to change or cancel, and a non-refundable cash and miles fare returns the cash part as credit, not money.
The American App Can Now Find You a Better Seat
A new feature in the American app watches the seat map for you. After booking, you choose what you want, like a window or aisle seat. If a matching seat opens up, the app moves you and sends a notification.
- Who can use it: AAdvantage members on a reservation for one passenger with a seat already assigned.
- When: Up to 24 hours before departure.
- Cost: Free. The app only moves you within your cabin, and never into a seat that costs more.

Other American Airlines News
Alaska Plans to Join the Atlantic and Pacific Joint Businesses
On September 29, American and Alaska announced that Alaska plans to join two joint businesses. In these, the airlines coordinate schedules and prices and share revenue on their routes:
- Atlantic: American, British Airways, Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus, and LEVEL.
- Pacific: American and Japan Airlines.
It still needs approval from the U.S. Department of Transportation and other regulators. Nothing changes for award bookings today. Atmos members can already book these oneworld partners. If it’s approved, the bigger change could be better connections with Alaska’s new long-haul flights from Seattle, like the Athens and Paris routes we covered in September.

New Codeshare With STARLUX to Taipei
American and STARLUX launched a codeshare on September 24, for travel from September 30. American now sells STARLUX flights to Taipei (TPE) from Los Angeles, Ontario, San Francisco, and Seattle. Phoenix will follow once it’s approved.
You can buy these flights on aa.com in Business, Premium Economy, or Economy and earn AAdvantage miles and Loyalty Points. You can’t book them with AAdvantage miles yet. The airlines only say they will work on award redemptions in the future.
If you want to fly STARLUX with points today, Atmos Rewards can book it. Search Los Angeles to Taipei on STARLUX with Atmos selected, and set an alert if the Business Class price is too high.

Starlink on Every Mainline Jet
American will install Starlink on more than 1,030 mainline aircraft, starting in early 2027. That includes more than 130 widebodies, so it will reach long flights to Europe, Asia, and South America. The earlier plan covered only Airbus single aisle aircraft. American says speeds will reach up to 1 Gbps per terminal.
The announcement doesn’t include American Eagle regional jets. It also doesn’t say how Starlink will work with the free Wi-Fi for AAdvantage members that AT&T sponsors today.
American’s Largest Admirals Club Is Coming to Charlotte
American will build its largest Admirals Club at Charlotte (CLT), with more than 40,000 square feet in the airport’s atrium. Construction starts in 2026, with no opening date yet. The current lounges stay open in the meantime. Plans include spa-style showers, bars, and separate areas to relax, eat, and work.
If you don’t have lounge access, a One-Day Pass costs $79 or 7,900 miles.
