What is Star Alliance?
Star Alliance is the world's largest global airline alliance, founded in 1997. With 25 member airlines, Star Alliance offers extensive connectivity across 195 countries, serving over 1,200 destinations worldwide.
The alliance enables passengers to earn and redeem miles across its network, with elite status benefits extending to all member airlines. Frequent flyers can enjoy priority services, lounge access, and additional baggage allowances through Star Alliance Silver and Gold tiers.
What's New With Star Alliance in 2025?
- ITA Airways to Join Star Alliance: Italy's ITA Airways is set to join Star Alliance in 2025, alongside new majority owner Lufthansa and prominent members such as ANA, Singapore Airlines, and United Airlines.
- Korean Air–Asiana Merger: Asiana Airlines will transition from Star Alliance to SkyTeam following its merger with Korean Air, scheduled for full integration by 2027.
- SAS Departure: Scandinavian Airlines (SAS), a founding member, departed Star Alliance on August 31, 2024, to join the SkyTeam alliance.
- New Lounge in Guangzhou: Star Alliance unveiled its first lounge in Asia at Guangzhou Baiyun International Airport, China, enhancing the travel experience for passengers in the region.
- Leadership Update: In December 2024, Michael Rousseau was elected as the new Chairperson of the Star Alliance Chief Executive Board, bringing fresh leadership to the alliance.
